Hi, I have been at a couple of meetings and I have really enjoyed myself. I have a 30 gallon community tank which is stocked with swordtails, rainbows, yoyo loaches and cardinal tetras. I have gone through black beard algae and filamitous algae. I have stated using RO water because tap water has too much phosphates. have suggested to my husband that maybe it is time for more tanks and he just looks worried.
I was at the June meeting and Paget made a quick statement about field trips, that she needed to know what people are interested in. I have no idea what past field trips have been like but I would love to hear a (flash) talk or main talk with slides about past trips. Are these trips mainly for people in the fish business? Maybe you could put an article on your website with pictures. How long are they and where do you go? Thanks
Hi Azuresky,
Paget is close, but my name is actually Patchin! It's an unusual family name, so no worries about getting it almost right :)
We've had all sorts of field trips in the past. In addition to what people have mentioned above, we organized an overnight trip to Pittsburgh which included visiting Eric Bodrock and Regina Spotti's respective fish rooms in Monongahela, PA, then swinging up to Pittsburgh for the Greater Pittsburgh Aquarium Society meeting, beers at a local craft brewery afterwards, a visit to Elmer's fish store, and finally a stop at member John Shaw's extensive outdoor fish ponds and fish multi-room on the way back to DC. Tons of fun. Then we co-sponsored a pig pickin' up at Rachel O'Leary's house. We offered a collecting trip to Florida for the first week of May of this year, but despite interest it just didn't fit with people's schedules so we had to cancel that. I would love to organize a day trip to tour local fish stores in northern New Jersey. We also have two local fish stores that will be opening in our area soon: one in Woodbridge, VA and the other in Dover, DE. It would be lots of fun to have some sort of PVAS open house event at each of those venues to welcome them and show support.
Really, the only thing that limits us is manpower, people's availability, and our imaginations. If you'd like to suggest ideas or would be willing to organize a little something, just say the word!
Cheers, Patchin
Thanks, those posts help alot. Last Saturday's talk was about a company going on a fish expedition to Brazil. I guess I started thinking about Paget's comments about going on a field trip and my mind went to Brazil. I am more comfortable with fish travel inside the US. and locally.
Most of the field trips I remember are associated with the Catfish Conventions: Collecting locally, visiting the national zoo’s Amazonia exhibit, and the Baltimore Aquarium.
Hello,
Welcome to PVAS! I'm glad you have been enjoying the meetings. Its always great to see new faces. I have been a PVAS member for for the past year or so. I currently have a betta at work.
I am not sure where all of the past field trips have been. But they are open to members of the club and the club board is open to input from members regarding future field trips. I know some past field trips have to local aquariums and members fishrooms.
