Anyone know of anywhere to find something larger than the home depot play sand and smaller than pea gravel? I have a feeling a rockyard might have what im looking for, but any leads would be apreciated.
For black, the black diamond blasting medium (basically tiny pieces of coal) is reputedly really great. I have pool filter sand in my tanks, which I really like. If you're looking for more of a dirt-like chip look, Safe-T-Sorb works also.
This has always been a problem for me. I currently have some black diamond blasting sand medium coarseness from tractor supply. All the pool filter sand I have purchased has been sugar sized or out of stock.
CONDOR Loose Absorbent: 2 gal Volume Absorbed per Pkg., 25 lb Wt, Bag, Not Scented. Grainger Supply has it $8/25lb bag. Get the tan color. It’s the size pebble you are looking for. Needs to be rinsed well but works great in freshwater tanks for cheap!!
Yeah, it's clay-based. Supposedly it has a pretty good cation exchange capacity (part of why it's sold as an absorbent), which makes it an alternative to expensive buffering soils for caridina shrimp!
If you can find a pool supply store in your area, pool filter sand is coarser than play sand. Only issue is that you never know what color it is going to be. In my experience, most pool filter sand is white, but that is not always the case.
