Daphnia culture is easy but can be hard to start. Once going it is easy, but getting it going in a new set up can be hard in that molds and fungus can appear. Daphnia are used around the world to test water quality because they are sensitive to almost everything not safe to drink. As a result the culture can crash due to traces of chlorine or dechlorinators, changes in salt levels, and high pollution levels from overfeeding. I recommend starting a culture in an aquarium or container that already has a biofilm (so use an established aquarium) or if you do not have that, then use water from an established tank and some sponge filter sqeezings to start a culture in a new container.
You have to treat daphnia cultures like you do a fish tank. That is, you need to do weekly water changes of about 50% to maintain water quality. Even with this you will get a culture crash sometime. The best hedge against this is to have more than one culture going, so you always have daphnia available to restart a crashed culture.
So a bag of daphnia magna is $5, with shipping included it is $14. I guess I could mail a half a bag of daphnia for $10 with shipping.
Do you sell smaller portions of daphnia to start a culture in a 1 gallon setup?
