I'm debating on the various styles and number of hatching vessals and I could use some ideas, and pictures would be even better.
My basement can be fairly cold and I dont particularly want to submerge bottles in a small tank with a heater. Ive also had hotter bulbs melt plastic in the past so id like to stay away from relying on a light based heat source.
My current idea is to conservativly expect a 36 hour+ hatching time and wall mount 3 smart water bottles above a sink.
I am debating whether to have the air intake come downward into the bottle or have it come up from the cap. Does anyone have a strong opinions about that?
The room is at 74F. I hatch 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of BS eggs using 100 mL saturated salt solution diluted to 1000 mL with water in the 2 liter bottle as shown. Actually have used the same bottles now for 20 years. It takes 20 to 24 hours to hatch. I pull out the air tube to harvest the BBS to let the eggs and shell float to the top (about 3 to 5 minutes) then siphon through an airline tube the BBS from the bottom of the container. I siphon only 70 to 90 % through a brine shrimp net. Replace the filtrate back in the hatchery and add more eggs for the next day.
The first hatch in a new or clean bottle may take 30 plus hours, but the next hatches are quicker.
At some point, when there are too many eggs floating on the surface, at 14 to 20 days, I harvest as normal, but they discard all the rest and start again.
