I haven't used Sicce Whale but have used the Fluval 307. I replaced the 307 with the one linked below on a 45 tall (?) in 2020. A little less expensive and has been working great.

Yes, it's straight forward. Unplug, turn knob to shut off the intake and return, drop the lines in a small bucket, and carry the canister to the sink. I have only opened/ cleaned it maybe six times in the last two years.
Note that the intake and return pieces, the rigid tubes and suction cups, that go in the tank are made of thinner plastic than the Fluval. But I've not needed to remove or adjust them them since the initial install. Except removing the intake strainer for cleaning.
