We are very excited about PVAS meeting, Saturday, March 7th. Can't wait to enjoy meeting Cory McElroy. Looks like there's a load of auction items lined up too -- 152 listed as of this post! Get your tank space ready . . .
Good advice about getting tank space ready. I'm starting to move fish around today for fasting prior to bagging. I see some of your BAP babies are making it into the auction. Bravo!
Yepper! Got extra bags yesterday too. Good tip on fasting. How long do you fast your before bringing in for auction? Also -- do you use any ammonia lock / products for the long bagging wait?
@Dave & Ben McGrew (Fish Folk) The length of time depends on the fish. I learned the hard way that Ancistrus have to be fasted for ~3 days. They just keep pooping and pooping and pooping. The first time I sold some, I fasted them in their regular tank for 24 hours, then put them in a tub with no plants, wood or substrate overnight. They continued to poop like crazy in the bags to my extreme embarrassment.
The next time, I moved a group of Ancistrus into a bare bottom tank for 3 days before bagging them, and they were fine. Many barbs, especially Rosy Barbs, are pretty poopy too, and feed constantly on biofilm in a planted tank. They too must be moved into a bare tank for at least 24, but preferably 48 hours, before being bagged. I leave most tetras in a regular tank and just fast them for 24 hours. There might still be a poop or two but nothing drastic. I'll bet Platys are pretty poopy, but don't know about Rams. You can ask Frank Cowherd. Frank knows everything.
I use either a few drops of Prime (or similar) ammonia-neutralizing solution or a small piece of Poly-Filter in each bag. Even though it's generally communicated that fish can't overdose on ammonia neutralizers, be aware that these products may lower the oxygen content of the water. A few drops should be plenty.
Hope to see you there Saturday! Just note... in the auction, item #1 is listed at 100; thus, there are 52 items listed thus far... it may go up to 152 - you never know!!!
